Pregnancy-related anxiety, including tokophobia
Pregnancy can bring excitement, hope, and also uncertainty and worry. For some, pregnancy is not a joyful time and these worries can feel overwhelming and persistent, and may include intense fear of childbirth, known as tokophobia.

How therapy can help
Therapy provides a safe space to explore these fears, understand where they come from, and develop strategies to manage anxiety. Together, we can work on coping techniques, emotional regulation, and preparing for birth with confidence and support.
Approaches may include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help identify and manage unhelpful thoughts and patterns, Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) to build self-compassion and reduce self-criticism, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support living in line with how you would like to live life, while managing difficult emotions.
For some, trauma-focused approaches such as EMDR therapy may also be helpful, particularly if fears are linked to past experiences or distressing medical appointments.
